AV-Test GmbH, the independent research house specializing in the IT security industry, just completed a new, comprehensive evaluation of the anti-virus market. For the first time, special emphasis was on so-called “proactive virus protection", meaning ability to detect viruses that are new and unknown to the products. The study was recently presented at the annual Virus Bulletin Conference, and details have now been published on the www.AV-Test.org website.
The study awarded Norman the highest mark among 23 competing vendors, and singled out Norman’s SandBox technology as the clear leader in the fight against new, unknown computer viruses.
Antivirus product versions as of May 1st this year were exposed to 100 different viruses first discovered in May through August. Norman detected 39 per cent of these as viruses. The average detection rate of the other 22 products was 10 per cent.
When the study was repeated using anti-virus products as of June 1st, Norman’s detection rate increased to 58.5 per cent of new viruses, reflecting further improvements in the SandBox technique during that period. Other major vendors score from around 30 per cent down to zero detection on new viruses.
Says Norman’s CEO, Henning Hansen: "We are obviously satisfied to see, once again, Norman’s world leading position in proactive virus detection officially confirmed. Our SandBox technology has identified most of the major virus attacks of the last year - hours, in some cases days or months before all competing products have been able to do so. The proactive detection feature has meant dramatically less attacks for Norman customers, while many users of competing products have sustained material damage to their systems."
The test has been performed by AV-Test GmbH, and was presented at the Virus Bulletin Conference in Chicago on September 31/October 1, 2004 by Andreas Marx. The tests conducted by AV-Test and Virus Bulletin are among the most recognized benchmarking events in the IT security industry and, based on the two organizations’ own information, constitute the only completely independent tests covering the anti-virus market. AV-Test collaborates with the Otto-von-Güricke Institute at University of Magdeburg, Germany and is considered a worldwide expert on the anti-virus software market.
