"Es mejor prevenir que curar, cuando se trata de proteger sus redes desde dentro" Hawker Pacific.

With 30 so called “road warriors”, each armed with a laptop and having access to the delicate IT infrastructure that runs one of the leading lights in the aviation industry, including 180 on-site PC's, Hawker Pacific felt it time to increase the security of its systems by incorporating Norman Data Defense NNP into its regime.

“The decision to re-enforce our defences came after an employee returned from a trip to China where he brought in more than he bargained for,” explains Colin Booth, Hawker Pacific's IT manager. “The user's laptop had become infected with a brand new virus that wasn't caught until the laptop was connected to the main IT system”.

The company's perimeter defences had stopped the virus from infiltrating the company's IT system, but this virus was wrapped up in its own Trojan Horse. “Essentially,” explained Colin “the door was left open for the employee to threaten the entire structure – he had by-passed all external perimeter checks and injected a virus directly into the vein of the system.”

Fortunately, Hawker Pacific runs Norman Data Defense anti-virus software which meant that the virus was captured and quarantined as soon as the laptop was ported. But the scare made Colin think long and hard about the fact that with a 150 strong workforce dotted around the world, internal threats were a real danger – protection didn't stop at the perimeter.

A large part of Colin's job is to ensure IT security, and the quarantined virus made him consider the internal threats to his system. “What if an employee ported a laptop that the virus checkers wasn't able to pick up? Or, what if an infected USB was inserted and a back door trojan was let loose on my system?” the implications could have devastating effects.

Colin added: “We have to protect our gateways, and that means from internal as well as external threats. These days the risk is too large – prevention is much better than cure!”
